DECORATING ON A BUDGET
|
|
Setting a budget, or making up your mind to do some of the work yourself, can relieve some stress and result in a room you're proud to call a DIY success. But however you plan to approach this task, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Don't hang frames above the crib. It may sound paranoid, but it's probably best not to tempt fate by hanging a heavy picture frame over a crib. Even though your newborn is not going to be leaning over the edge to play with the pretty, gilded wall hanging, accidents do happen.
If you have to hang something over the crib, consider either moving the crib a few feet from the wall, or hanging something very lightweight in that spot. A Canvas print on 3/4" deep stretcher bars fits the bill, or a beautiful print on fine art paper, mounted on foam board.
- Use plexiglass instead of glass. Regardless of where in the room you are hanging the art, consider using an acrylic glazing instead of real glass. If something does fall and break, overlooked shards may prick bare little toes, or your own bare feet when you stumble to the nursery in the middle of the night.
Plexiglass does not shatter when it falls. In addition to keeping broken pieces off the carpet, it also protects the art in the frame from being punctured or torn by the sharp edges.
- Don't hang artwork too low on the wall. Though it may feel like years in sleeplessness time, in a few short months, Baby will be starting to use the walls and every other available object to pull herself up. If you're planning a vertical display of stacked frames, make sure the lowest one is a no less than four feet above the ground, or place that particular decor in a place little explorers can't get to.
One thing to keep in mind as you're planning your low-cost baby's room is the potential for change.
If this room is going to be transformed from the nursery to your toddler's bedroom, and then your preschooler's bedroom, you'll probably want a change in decor at some point. Consider painting the walls a neutral color, so when you make the big shifts, you can skip that costly and time consuming step.
Plan to swap out the images in the frames rather than buy new frames. If you're decorating with canvas prints instead, consider keeping most of them small and inexpensive to exchange, with just one large piece that can remain for a number of years.
Now that we've looked at some of the general basics, let's delve into fun and budget-friendly ideas for wall decor in your nursery.

FILLING YOUR KEENART FRAMES

Once you'd decided on the decor style and frames you need, you'll need to plan out how to fill them! There are lots of great ways to make creative use of picture frames around the baby's room (or even around the whole house!).
- Wide mats with matching frames. Wide, white mats within white frames seems to be all the rage these days. Border little 6x6" or 8x8", child-friendly images with a 4" mat and slender matching frame. If you're using a white border, you can go for a real pop of color in the image, without worrying about it clashing with the frame.
- Need a budget-wise idea? Frame pages from your favorite children's book (Goodnight Moon has some beautiful, block-color images), or postcards of artwork or beautiful vacation locales.
- Opt for a shadow box picture frame, and enclose your baby's baptism gown or first pair of shoes.
Shadow boxes offer lots of great possibilities including grandma-made quilting squares, clay hand or footprints, or a unique, divided box for items like your hospital bracelets, their newborn cap, photos, and other special keepsakes.
- Use a shadow box or regular picture frame with a deep rabbet (the space behind the lip) to frame Baby's initials, or spell out their entire name in individual frames.
You can cut out cardboard letters and wrap them in felt, yarn, or cotton batting and fabric. You can line the mounting board with scrapbooking paper or other patterned sheets. Or use wood block letters and paint or embellish them with buttons, beads, or any other item that suits your decor.

NOT INTO PICTURE FRAMES?

|
There are so many ways to make your baby's room beautiful, unique, and completely personal. At KeenART Media, we can help with our wide array of cost-efficient products and services just perfect for prepping your nursery. We offer a wide selection of picture frames, as outlined above, but there are many other options as well.
- PhotoTex Peel-n-Stick Adhesive Fabric is an inexpensive, lightweight, and safe way to decorate your baby's room.
PhotoTex is easy to cut, place, remove and reapply. We can print any digital image on the fabric, from wallpaper designs to photographs, to whimsical, colorful scenes you can cut out. Create a wildlife menagerie or fairy forest realm to surround your new baby.
If you move or decide to switch rooms, the material peels off with no damage to the paint, and can be reattached in the new location - over and over again!
- Your favorite images can be printed on fine art papers to be framed or otherwise displayed. We can reproduce that drawing your elder child made, a classic painting (see the next section), or one you created yourself.
- Fine art prints aren't limited to pictures. Consider creating a beautiful display of your favorite quotes from children's books or songs. Minimalist and sweet, they just might end up inspiring baby's first words! Any paper print can be mounted on foam board or wood instead of framed.
- Giclée canvas prints are always a beautiful and versatile choice. Whether it's artwork or your child's initials, a frameless, pattered or boldly colored print on canvas will brighten up the walls without adding the additional cost and weight of a picture frame.
Consider spelling out your child's full name in individual blocks. Alternately, our graphic designer can create a Wordle combining your son or daughter's name and all the words of love you want to share.
